Buying a car isn’t as simple as picking a make, model and color. It takes a long time and a lot of deliberation on the buyer’s part. There are some crucial questions to ask yourself and whomever is selling the car before you make a commitment to a new or used vehicle.

If you’re set on buying a brand new car, the questions to ask when buying a car will be different than if you’re looking at a used car or a new car. For a new car, you should consider the brand you’re most interested. Cars are made all around the world, from Japan to America to Europe. Where your car comes from could be an important factor in your decision. Decide first if the brand of car, and where in the world that brand is headquartered, matters to you. If it does, decide if you’d rather get a car from your home country, or a car that has been imported from elsewhere. Often, cars from specific countries have certain reputations. These reputations may not always be true, but they could color your decision, so keep all these factors in mind.

The size of the car is also important. Ask yourself how big you want your car to be and how big it needs to be. You may want that sporty little car you saw on the lot, but a larger car may prove to be more practical for your everyday needs.

Also ask about safety. If you think that crash-test scores are important, then ask the car dealership about those scores. They should be able to provide that and other safety information upon request for you.

Whether you’re buying a used car or a brand new vehicle, one of the most important questions to ask when buying a car is about your budget. How much can you spend? How much would you like to spend? How much is too much? You should have these numbers in mind before you start your car buying adventure. Without these numbers to guide you, you could end up overreaching your budget.

When buying a used car, there are additional questions you should ask the seller. Of course, you’ll always want to ask if you can take a test drive of the car. In new cars, this is important to see if the car fits your driving style. Is the pedal too loose? Do you like how the steering wheel feels? But in a used car, this can also allow you to sniff out any damage or problems with the car.

When you buy a used car, you should also ask about the vehicle’s history. The seller may be able to provide you with a vehicle history report. This will let you know the mileage on the car, whether it has been in any accidents and other details. This could clue you in as to the condition of the car before you buy it.

Also ask if the car currently needs any repair work. A used car may seem like a steal at first, but if it needs significant repair work then you may end up losing money on the bargain.

Overall, just remember to keep your eyes open when buying a car. Don’t let a seller talk you into a vehicle that isn’t right for you. And remember – there are no bad questions.
