If you’re looking for a starter home, or wish to downgrade into something smaller following an emptied nest, shopping for a condo is probably high on your list of to-do’s. Making this large of an investment takes times and consideration – you definitely don’t want to bid on the first thing you see, especially if you haven’t looked, literally and figuratively, at every angle. It’s a good idea, therefore, to go into each model or potential unit with the following questions to answer.
1) Do I like the location of this complex or detached condo? Is it in a neighborhood I would feel comfortable being in at night?
2) How about my potential neighbors? Do they seem friendly, and do they keep their property neat? Are there any concerns like loud music and yapping dogs?
3) How convenient is this location to work, school, and shopping? Will my commute be affected?
4) What amenities come with the condo, and what fees am I expected to pay for upkeep?
5) Has there been a recent assessment of the complex? Will this affect any prices quoted to me previously?
6) How easy will it be to move my furniture into this condo? Is there room for everything? Will I have to get rid of a few items first?
7) How about privacy concerns? Are the windows positioned such so that people can easily see me?
9) Is there a covenant that would prohibit things like satellite TV or outdoor decorations?
10) How easy or how difficult is it for friends to visit? Is there room to host overnight guests? Ample parking?
As you look at condos, consider your current lifestyle and needs. The home you buy should reflect and accommodate your belongings and family comfortably. Just because you choose a smaller home doesn’t mean you have to feel cramped. Find the place that best suits what you need in a home.
