A stair glide is a machine that you really must have at home when you or someone else living with you is facing problems with mobility due to old age, illness or injury. The reason for this is that a stair glide can give a mobility-challenged person some semblance of freedom and independence from other people, as they no longer have to rely on others just so they could move to the upper levels of their house.

However, many people cannot afford to buy a brand-new stair lift. That is understandable; after all, an entirely new unit can set you back for a couple thousand dollars, and this price may not include installation and other add-on fees. To save on costs, these people often resort to buying used stair glides instead.

Are you considering buying a used stair lift to save on the expenses involved in purchasing a new one? If your answer is yes, here are three tips that can help you.

1. Buy straight from the manufacturer or a reputable dealer. In your search for used stair lifts, you are likely to come across ads for cheap units from private vendors. While this can be very tempting, the problem here is that you can never be sure about the overall condition of the unit. Sure, you can save up on your purchase, but you will end up regretting it if the unit breaks down on you a few months after. You also can’t get any warranty from a private seller. So, buy straight from the manufacturer or a reputable dealer. Not only will you be sure about the condition of the stair lift, but you can also avail of warranties.

2. Buy a used stair glide model that is not yet phased out. Another danger to buying used stair lifts is that you may end up getting a model that is no longer sold brand-new in the market. In this case, it may be troublesome to find parts if the unit breaks down on you and requires repairs. You won’t have this problem if the used stair lift you got is still available as a brand-new product.

3. Don’t skimp on the warranty. No matter how good the condition of the used stair glide is, the fact is that it’s already old and has seen some use. It is more likely to break down on you when you least expect it. So, make sure that you avail of the warranty from the vendor if it is offered. It may not be as lengthy or comprehensive as warranties given with brand-new units, but it is better than nothing.

If you can’t afford to buy a brand-new stair glide, you can always turn to used stair lifts to increase accessibility in your home. However, you need to make sure that whatever product you purchase must be in good condition and has the necessary warranty.
