Buying a new refrigerator may, at first, seem a pretty basic task. However, if you don’t want to end up with an appliance that doesn’t meet your family’s needs, be sure to take the following tips in mind when you are looking for your next refrigerator.

The first feature you should consider is the capacity, or food storage volume. Eight to ten cubic feet of storage is typically what two people require. For each additional person in the family, add an extra cubic foot. Buying the appropriate size is important. If you buy a refrigerator that is too large, you will waste energy and it will cost you more than necessary. If you buy one that is too small, you will likely waste time trying to make fit all the food.

The next factor is one you must consider: How much space you have available for a refrigerator. You should measure the width and depth of the refrigerator with the doors open, and make sure your leave a couple of inches to allow for breathing room. This will allow for greatest efficiency.

The next decision involves the configuration of the compartments. Typical options would be the following:

Bottom mount – Refrigerator on top, freezer below that.

Top mount – Freezer on top, refrigerator below that.

Side by side – Refrigerator and freezer are adjacent. This option works well when space is limited.

Compact – Smaller versions common in dorm rooms and basements.

The next feature to consider is shelving. Most refrigerator shelves are adjustable, with variations among different models. Reflect on the items you will be storing most often when deciding on shelving options.

Another option that usually will cost more but is arguably worth it is spill-proof shelves. Spill-proof shelves will limit any spill to just one shelf and stop it from leaking throughout the entire refrigerator.

Next on the list of things to consider is an ice maker. Ice makers are a nice feature, making them very common. They come in either the freezer or an integral part of the door. This latter option often also comes with a water dispenser. If your refrigerator has a water dispenser, then you will also most likely have a filter that will require periodic replacement.

There are many options to consider the next time you are in the market for a refrigerator, many more than what are discussed above. Just like any major purchase, you should take your time and study your options, both online and offline. If you take the time to do your homework, you are much more likely to end up with a refrigerator model that fits the needs of you and your family, both from a functional and financial standpoint.
